By the way,
The official celebration of the anniversary of Derbent took place in September 2015.
The Coat of Arms of Derbent was approved in 2013 for the 2000th jubilee of the city. That’s how it is described, “in the dissected shield on the right, in a silver area upon the green earth, there is a mountain of the same colour with two tops and in front of it there is a golden indented tower with two black arrow-slits, a dark-red archway and a golden wall to the right over the shield edge. Four azure wavy belts are depicted to the left of the tower. On the left, there are three dark-red poppy flowers with black centers, on green scapes with the same leaves – one upright and two across, banded with a golden cord across with two dark-red roots of madder, also across. The shield is topped with a municipal crown – golden with five sharpened waves, with dark-red joints and a gold ampyx decorated with gems along the bottom edge”.
The crown on top of the shield is heraldic, it shows that Derbent has the status of an urbant district.
The ampyx with gems means that in its historical past the city of Derbent was the capital of a state (Derbent Emirate). The red joints of the stone masonry means the city was also the capital of the province with the same name within the Russian Empire.
Derbent is one of the most ancient cities of the world. Before Crimea was annexed in 2014, it had been the most ancient city of Russia. Derbent is located in the south of Dagestan, on the western coast of the Caspian Sea, not far from the mouth of the Samur River, where the Caucasian Mountains are very close to the coast. The first settlement of Kuro-Arakskaya Culture appeared here in the early bronze age – at the end of the 4th millennium B.C. the first mention of the Caspian Gates (the oldest name of Derbent) refers to the 6th century B.C. the modern city was founded in 438 A.D. as a Persian fortress that consisted of “Naryn-Kala” citadel on a hill and two stone walls descending from it to the sea which used to lock the narrow three kilometer-long pass between the sea and the Caucasian mountains.
Today Derbent is the second largest city of Dagestan, a unique monument of the ancient history, an open-air museum, a large touristic center. In 2003 UNESCO included “Naryn-Kala” citadel and the historical part of the city into the List of the world heritage monuments.
